Overseas Trip

Thailand Trip 2011

12/13/11 01:15 pm - 8 DEC 2011: GOING HOME

We got up quite late for breakfast today as we did not anticipate going anywhere else.  After the breakfast, we went to collect our tailored clothes and went back to our hotel rooms to re-pack our luggage.  My greatest regret is in the bringing of a luggage that is really too small.

At about 10am, we went to check out our hotel room and waited for the tour agency to pick us up to send us to the airport.  At the airport, we went to claim our VAT before walking aimlessly around and eventually, I decided to have a BK meal before we leave.  I realized that the price of the meal was considerably higher than normal.

We then board the plane at the stipulated time but I was disappointed as this plane did not have its own personalized screen.  I was either listening to my MP3 player or forcing myself to sleep for most parts of the journey.

Finally, our plane landed safely and again, Josh’s dad came to pick us up.

It was a really short trip but I was glad to have made the trip.   I am now thinking of where to go next.  Most of your working life really is to make more money and spend it elsewhere.

12/13/11 01:11 pm - 7 DEC 2011: MORE CULTURAL ACTIVITIES, PLEASE

We had our breakfast in the hotel before proceeding to The Siam Society.  It is not usual kind of tourist attraction and even the cab driver could not find his way.  The place basically showcases the traditional spirit and belief systems of the Lanna people, wihin the context of a 19th century northern Thai house.  It was not as impressive as the JTH but I guessed we could make do with it.

We went to the Platinum Mall this time round to shop.  It was huge and was occupied by many small shops selling similar items. I think after some time, you will get bored of the place.  I managed to buy two bermudas from one of the shops.  We grew tired of the place and were eager to find a place to sit and have lunch.  Eventually, we went back to the Central Mall and had pizzas.

After lunch, we had a walk within the mall before deciding to go back to the hotel for a 2-hour power nap.

We woke up and changed before going to the lobby area to wait for our tour agent to bring us to watch the Siam Niramit performance.  We had our dinner there before touring the area and watching the 80-minute performance.  The state-of-the-art technology employed really captivates and enthuses the audiences.  However, it would have been better if we were seated nearer the stage as the performers appeared like midgets to us.

As the usual practice, we got back to hotel and borrowed yet another DVD entitled “The blind side”.

12/13/11 01:09 pm - 6 DEC 2011: ON A SHOPPING SPREE

We woke up rather early today for our breakfast.  After that, we took a cab to visit Jim Thompson’s house.  I took an interest of him when I read about his life in Thailand and when his place was mentioned in the guidebook I borrowed, Josh and I decided that we should go pay a visit. It was quite an interesting sight to behold and the tour guide also briefed us snippets of his life.

We left the place and went to MBK for shopping.  It was a gigantic place and it took us quite some time to orientate ourselves.  We bought quite a number of expensive items from there which included a pair of Kenneth Cole’s shoe and a Braun Buffel wallet.

We also went to the Central Mall and bought several items which included DVDs and some local delights.  These local delights were really heavy and I was kind of regretful to have been this greedy in the purchase.

With the shopping’s done and lunch settled, we went back to the hotel to put these things down first before going for a 2-hour Thai massage.  I used to like these massages dearly, however after I have gone for regular massages locally, such massage no longer entice me.

We went back to the hotel tailor after that for the fittings before we went out for dinner.  It was Japanese food this time round.  The food was tasty and cheap.

As we were feeling both full and tired, we decided to go back to hotel straight and watched yet another show titled “The tourist”.

12/13/11 01:07 pm - 5 DEC 2011: FLOODING THE CITY: IN THE LAND OF THOUSAND SMILES

I left home early in the morning with a small luggage and a backpack to meet up with Josh at Chinese Garden MRT station.  Josh’s dad volunteered to send us to the airport which saved us quite a fair bit of money.

We were flying on Thai Airway TG407 flight and I was pretty surprised to see a personalized TV screen.  Even though I felt a little bit tired, I decided to watch a movie titled “Hello, stranger”. I was quite happy that I managed to finish watching the show by the end of the flight.  And I am also kind of delighted to fly non-budget this time round as I really missed the flight services.

We were drove to our hotel “Amari Watergate Hotel” by the partnering travel agency and after we had checked in to the hotel, we rested for about half an hour before making our way to exploring the place.

We first went to Platinum Mall, which housed many shops selling a range of clothes and accessories at a rather low rate.  As most shops were about to close then, we decided to venture further and made our way to Central Mall. It resembles the shopping malls we see very often in the city area.  As we were quite hungry, we went to Din Tai Fung for our dinner.  Food was average but it was cheaper than in Singapore.  We were also too full to have another round of supper.

While making our way back to the hotel, we see hundreds of Thais gathering together outside the different malls to celebrate their king’s birthday.  When we were back in the hotel, we went to check out the tailor shop and went on to making a suit, two pants and two shirts.

Initially, we wanted to go to the night market but we were feeling quite exhausted so we put off the idea.  Instead, we borrowed a DVD named “Slumdog millionaire” from the hotel and watched it till about 2am (Sin time).

12/17/10 11:03 am - Day 5 – Time to say Goodbye

We agreed to meet at 11.30am for this was our last day in Hong Kong and we needed to check out of the hotel around noon. I was lazing around in the hotel room, watching boring TV shows while waiting for time to pass. As I was feeling a bit hungry, I ate two muesli bars.

At noon, we did the necessary documentation and payment before we deposited our luggage with the hotel. After that, we had our brunch at Ying Xin. This time round, we ordered more than we could finish and it was really filling us up to the brim.

We left the place and went to Jian Sha Zu to buy lao po bing to bring home to Singapore. Following that, we went to Charlie Brown's Cafe for a cup of coffee. The place was quite well-decorated eve n though the food and beverages were obviously over-priced. Nonetheless, we had a good time there as we surfed the Internet and had a chat about our deployment next year.

By the time we left the cafe for Women's street, we were a bit running late. Jane and Xiujuan prowled the street for their desired buys and after that, we took double quick time to reach our hotel. From there, we took the hotel coach to the Hong Kong airport.

At the Hong Kong airport, we were having a hard time locating the departure terminal and it took us quite some while to do so. And we had our last shopping spree before it was time to check in for our flight back to Singapore. We were to have our dinner there but alas, we were shocked how shabby the facilities were in the terminal we were in. Eventually we had to make do with the dinner on the plane, which was quite delicious, given that we were already wane of food for about 10 hours by then.

Our plane safely reached Singapore and yes, it's home sweet home.

Another trip another day.

12/16/10 09:48 pm - Day 4: Shop till we drop

We woke up considerably later today as we knew that we would be doing little else other than shopping. We had our brunch at a Cha Can Ting which was significantly cheaper than the ones we had on the previous two days. And of course, it didn't taste as well.

After our brunch, we shopped around those small shops located at Nathan Road before branching to the big shopping malls when we believed they were open.

We first went to Langham Place and the ladies immediately rushed to H & M. We then discussed and concluded that we were better off going on our separate ways and to meet later for lunch as they were into shopping for girlish things. I agreed and while they left for other shopping malls, I just hanged around the same mall and meet them after about three hours later.

All of us went back with something!

We then returned to our hotel after lunch and rested our tired selves for about two hours or so. Again the two ladies went out to explore while Sujuan and I rested slightly longer in our respective hotel rooms. We met up and went looking for the two ladies for dinner at a Shao La shop. The food was quite tasty and we ended up with a full stomach.

12/16/10 09:29 pm - Day 3: Across the seas

We were deliberating what to do on the third day as we had our breakfast at another restaurant (London restaurant or something along the vein). The food cost as much as Ying Xi but was not as nice. Eventually, we took a vote and agree that we ought to go to Macau that day. We took the MTR to the desired station and from there got our ferry tickets from the sales counter.

We reached Macau in about an hour and once there, that was this guy who cajoled us to hire him to chauffeur us around the island. I remembered vividly the tininess of the island and was initially against his proposal. However, our legs were really quite tired from walking and this time round, we were not as poor as my last trip. He took us on a ride round the island and some of the places I though I had not visited before. Other than that, I realised that if your legs could take you round the island, don't be taken for a ride (as the tour wasn't exactly cheap). Our last spot was at the famous Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral where we took the most number of photos. Honestly, Macau did not entice me previously; it did not this time round again. We waited for our chauffeur to return to fetch us and he was a little more than late. We were so afraid of being deserted.

We left Macau, took the ferry ride and off we went back to Hong Kong. As it was quite late, we decided to visit Victoria Habour and took a short walk along the Avenue of Stars before watching the “A Symphony of Light” performance over a cup of hot latte. Lovely coffee and average performance. We then walked aimlessly before deciding to pop in for some desserts at Tang Chao. Frankly, the dessert was only passable and tau hwey was also not that fantastic.

We went to the nearby H & M for quick look before leaving the place and returned to our hotel.

12/16/10 09:24 pm - Day 2: The land of Wonder

We woke up early as we wanted to visit Disneyland. We had our sumptuous breakfast at Ying Xin restaurant located at Mongkok. The food was delicious and the price reasonable. We left the place and took the MTR to Disneyland station. Having purchase our tickets, we entered the vicinity and the first thing we do was to: Use their washrooms.

We then walked towards a queue, like any typical Singaporeans will, and realised that they were waiting for their turns to take photographs with both Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse (which was rare). Even though the queue was long, we decided to join in as well as we knew that if we were to miss this one, we probably had no chance in taking photos with them again. After a horrendous wait, it was finally our turn and we took around 8 photos with them? Then, we started touring the place. Some exhibits were nice, some not quite and most of the time, we were just clicking away. We also took a number of rides, including the thrill ride. It did not turn our stomach around, but it did left us in a bit of shock for a few seconds. The photo taken by the park showing us with different reactions was hilarious but as a sign of respect to the ladies, I decided against taking a snapshot of it. The other rides were less heart-pumping but nevertheless enjoyable. I especially like the “It's a Small World” ride which was the longest as I like the catchy tune following the ride. We had our lunch and from there, we know who's the big-eaters and who's not. We ate quickly at we were rushing to see the fake snow and the march off by the various characters. Luckily, we did not fail ourselves! And after that, we just took a good slow walk around the park and eventually took photos with both Piglet and Goofy. Then we went back to the parade square to see the Toys march-off, which in my opinion wasn't very impressive. After that, we continued to take photos and eventually landed ourselves in their photo shop and got ourselves a few hundred Hong Kong dollars poorer with their professionally-taken photos. And before we leave the dreamy land, we craned with necks high as we sat outside the castle, looking at the spectacular fireworks performance. And that's it.

We stopped at Mongkok and ate some local delicacies while drinking a rather cheap but large cup of Gong Cha. And while Xiujuan and Jane wanted to explore the place a little further, Sujuan and I decided that we had enough for a day and returned to the hotel first.

12/16/10 09:21 pm - Hong Kong 2010

5 years ago, I went to Hong Kong and did not like it a bit. I promise not to go again. However, I caved in when my classmates invited me to join them as we all believed it would be the last one where we can be all jolly and rid of any stress.

We decided on taking Tiger Airways for it was the cheapest and we paid a price for it. The budget terminal was small and looked nothing like its more glamourous counterparts, i.e. T1 and T2 . And there were hardly any place for us to rest or shop. We checked in at the scheduled time and we must say that apart from the plane's rather puny size, we have really little to complain about.

Day 1: The first night

We reached Hong Kong at about 9 plus at night. And the first thing I was hoping was to feel some cool breeze(technically, it's their winter). There was none and not only that, I was actually feeling quite warm. Luckily, we managed to find the shuttle coach to ferry us to the Hotel. Speaking of the hotel, it is rather old-looking both internally and externally. But what I like about the accommodation arrangement is I could have a whole room dedicated to myself (Yay!). And what's more, mine was an upgraded one as they could not provide us with the one we have reserved.

As we were pretty hungry, we decided to head off for dinner cum supper with recommendation from one of the hotel staff at an eatery opposite our hotel. I'm quite fine with the food but it didn't go well with the ladies. And with the darting eyes and awkward motions from the rest of the customers there, it really left the ladies feeling worried all night long. We left promptly and agreed to meet for breakfast at 8am the next day.
